Maomao’s Return to the Imperial Court

Season two picks up where the first left off, with Maomao, a sharp-witted former servant girl with a talent for herbal medicine, continuing her role in the Imperial Palace. Still working as an assistant to the powerful eunuch Jinshi, Maomao’s keen observation skills and medical knowledge make her indispensable in solving various court mysteries. 

From curing mysterious illnesses to unraveling political schemes, Maomao’s intellect continues to shine as she navigates the dangerous world of court politics, where alliances shift, and trust is rare. Her humble background, combined with her growing reputation, brings both opportunities and dangers.

New Mysteries & Politics


Season two will introduce a host of new challenges for Maomao, including a mysterious plague sweeping through the palace and a poisoning plot that threatens the Emperor himself. Maomao’s analytical approach and knowledge of poisons and remedies will be put to the test as she works to protect the Imperial family. 

In addition to medical cases, viewers will also see her navigate political agendas. Her interactions with Jinshi, whose true identity remains a closely guarded secret, will intensify as their mutual trust and dependence grow. However, their relationship remains fraught with tension, adding to the excitement.

Returning Cast and Production Team

Studio OLM, known for its meticulous attention to detail in the first season, returns to bring the stunning visuals and intricate world of The Apothecary Diaries to life once again. Fans can expect more lushly animated depictions of ancient China’s palace life, from its grand halls to its hidden corners. 

Aoi Yūki reprises her role as Maomao, perfectly capturing the character’s sharp tongue and brilliant mind, while Takeo Otsuka returns as the enigmatic Jinshi.
